In the vibrant decade of the 1950s, train services still reached the majority of corners of the country, with the pervasive presence of steam permeating every aspect. Many of the locomotive classes employed in Scotland remained confined to the northern borders, never venturing southward. Thus, in 1952, Brian Morrison embarked on a remarkable mission to document every locomotive class that graced the Scottish railways. Over time, this endeavor reached its culmination in 1958 when one of the post-Grouping developments of the Caledonian Railway's 439 class 0-4-4Ts was identified at Glasgow St Enoch station. This comprehensive and visually stunning album serves as a testament to the diverse range of steam locomotives that thrived in Scotland during the 1950s. While it may not include every single example of these magnificent machines, it does showcase at least one representative of each type that graced the country's rail networks during that era. The journey begins in the enchanting city of Edinburgh, traversing the East Coast via Dunfermline and Thornton Junction, before venturing across to Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh. The album then retraces its path back through Aviemore, Perth, Stirling, and Glasgow, culminating in Kilmarnock and Dumfries, with numerous stops along the way. Each page of this captivating album invites the reader to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of steam-powered locomotives, offering a glimpse into the era's transportation landscape and the remarkable engineering achievements that defined it.
