Searching for the 17th Century on Nevis marks the inaugural installment in a series of monographs dedicated to the comprehensive archaeological exploration of the Eastern Caribbean landscape, structures, and artifacts by the Nevis Heritage Project. This comprehensive volume presents the outcomes of extensive documentary research and excavations conducted at two significant sugar plantation sites on the island of Nevis. Upper Rawlins, situated atop the majestic Nevis mountain, was inhabited during the late 17th and early 18th centuries before being abandoned in the early years. Fenton Hill, on the other hand, experienced occupancy from the mid-17th to the mid-19th century, initially with an earthfast timber structure, likely serving as a dwelling house, which was later transformed into a kitchen and encased in stone around 1700. The adjacent main house, which may have been destroyed during the French raid of 1706, was subsequently rebuilt in timber. The final phase of occupation was overseen by Portuguese Madeiran laborers, who were introduced in the 1840s to address a labor shortage.
Detailed reports on the findings assemblage encompass comprehensive discussions of a diverse range of artifacts. These include handmade, bonfired Afro-Caribbean pottery crafted by enslaved African women, imported European ceramics and glass, clay tobacco pipes, metalwork, and building materials. The prevalence of imported goods originating from south-western England serves as a clear indication of the strong commercial connections between Nevis and Bristol, highlighting the intricate trade networks that existed in this region. However, the local production of ceramics on Nevis offers valuable insights into the estate-based ceramic production, drawing inspiration from European styles and techniques.
Through these meticulous investigations, the Nevis Heritage Project has contributed significantly to our understanding of the historical and cultural significance of the Eastern Caribbean. The series of monographs dedicated to the exploration of different periods and regions on Nevis promises to unravel more mysteries and reveal the rich tapestry of this captivating island's past.
