Understanding the intricate relationship between canonical African art and the practices of contemporary African artists is the focus of a significant study in this book. It explores how modern artists are reinterpreting the continent's artistic heritage to adapt to the contemporary environment by recognizing the second lives of historical African artworks when they enter museum collections and engaging them in conversation with the works of six established and emerging African artists.
Historically, African art objects, including masks and sculptures, were made from a diverse array of materials, such as medicine bundles, raffia assemblages, hides, and metal. These materials were often repurposed, giving them a "second career" beyond their original purpose. This practice of transforming materials has a broader cultural significance in Africa today, as artisans incorporate electronics, discarded engines, and rubber tires into domestic and personal items.
The contemporary African artists featured in this book—El Anatsui (Ghana), Nnenna Okore (Nigeria), Zohra Opoku (Ghana), Elias Sime (Ethiopia), Tahir Carl Karmali (Kenya), and Gonçalo Mabunda (Mozambique)—reflect these dual traditions. They revive conceptual elements of historical African art by creating work that responds to the evolution of Africas artistic traditions.
This book is distributed for the Cleveland Museum of Art, with an exhibition schedule from November 1, 2020, to March 15, 2021. The exhibition will showcase the works of these artists and provide a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between canonical African art and the practices of contemporary African artists.
