While previous research has delved into the academic adaptation or acculturation processes of Chinese students pursuing studies abroad, there has been limited attention given to the students' own perspectives and narratives of their experiences. To contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of this highly mobile group, this study takes a closer look at the students' self-identity narratives. How do they make sense of their foreign adventure? How do they position themselves among their peers and their family members, as well as within the broader transnational context?

Based on 29 in-depth, biographical interviews with Chinese students in the United States, the findings reveal that the participants engage in a continuous process of interpreting and revising their individual, academic, and cultural identities. In the familial context, a recurring narrative of the high-potential only child could be observed. Many students (and their family members) felt that their unique talents and personalities were not appreciated within the Chinese educational system and thus sought more holistic environments abroad.

Furthermore, the study highlights the significance of language as a key factor in shaping the students' self-identity narratives. The participants expressed a sense of identity crisis and uncertainty due to the challenges of learning and communicating in a foreign language. They often struggled with feelings of isolation and loneliness, as well as a sense of being misunderstood or marginalized by their peers and the broader society.

To address these challenges, the study suggests that universities and educational institutions should provide more support and resources to Chinese students studying abroad. This includes language training programs, cultural exchange initiatives, and counseling services to help them navigate the complexities of cultural adaptation and identity development.

In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the self-identity narratives of Chinese students studying abroad. By examining their perspectives and experiences, we can gain a deeper understanding of the factors that shape their academic and personal journeys. It highlights the importance of recognizing and valuing the unique talents and perspectives of this diverse group of students, and of providing them with the support and resources they need to thrive in their foreign environments.
