  • More about Shakespeare and British World War Two Film

During World War Two, British writers and thinkers turned to Shakespeare to articulate the values for which their nation was fighting, but the cinema presented a more multifaceted Shakespeare who signaled division as well as unity. This study demonstrates how Shakespeare served as a powerful imaginative resource for filmmakers seeking to think through some of the most pressing issues and problems that beset wartime British society.

During World War Two, a significant number of British writers and thinkers sought solace in Shakespeare's works to articulate the values for which their nation was fighting. However, the cinema presented a more complex and multifaceted portrayal of Shakespeare, one that encompassed both division and unity. This study adopts a synchronic approach to adaptation, situating Shakespeare's movies within the broader histories of film and society. By doing so, it avoids the traditional impasse where Shakespeare's works are solely considered the starting point, middle, and end of critical study. Through a close analysis of works by renowned filmmakers such as Laurence Olivier, Leslie Howard, Humphrey Jennings, and the partnership of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, among others, this study demonstrates how Shakespeare served as a powerful imaginative resource for filmmakers grappling with some of the most pressing issues and problems that plagued wartime British society.
