Shaped Places of Carroll County, New Hampshire, is an extension of an award-winning speculative urban design project by EXTENTS, an architecture and design practice led by McLain Clutter and Cyrus Peñarroyo. This project delves into the intricate interplay between our identities and the physical environments that shape our lives. By exploring this relationship, Shaped Places fosters a dialogue between diverse discourses, ranging from critical geography to formalist art criticism and the urbanization strategies of the early 20th-century Russian avant-garde. A central theme in the work is the role of the rural-urban divide in perpetuating the divided political landscape in the United States. The project culminates in the design of three linear cities in Carroll County, New Hampshire. In each speculative urban design proposal, rural and urban patterns of development and contrasting lifestyles are merged to create functional bodies of politics from a sharply divided population.
