As part of her school's community week, Kaitlyn visits a local animal shelter. There, she meets Teddy, a gorgeous whippet cross who captures her heart instantly. Determined to make Teddy the star of her project, Kaitlyn spends countless hours caring for him and creating a beautiful presentation about his life.

However, her happiness is short-lived when a boy in her class, James, watches Kaitlyn's presentation and falls in love with Teddy. He decides he wants to adopt Teddy and takes him home. Kaitlyn is heartbroken but tries to be happy for James and Teddy.

But as time goes on, Kaitlyn realizes how much she truly loves Teddy and how much he means to her. She can't bear the thought of losing him and starts to feel jealous of James and his family. She even starts to dread the surprise birthday outing her family has organized, thinking that it might be a chance for James to show Teddy off to his friends.

However, things take a surprising turn when Kaitlyn finds herself at the shelter, looking for Teddy. She realizes that James and his family aren't suitable for adopting Teddy and that he needs a home where he can be loved and cared for forever.

Kaitlyn is overjoyed when she finds Teddy and takes him home with her. She knows that he will be happy and safe with her and that she has made the right decision. From that day on, Kaitlyn and Teddy are inseparable, and Kaitlyn learns the true meaning of love and responsibility.
