  • More about Short Stirling: RAF Heavy Bomber in World War II

The Short Stirling was the Royal Air Force's first four-engine heavy bomber of WWII, but its performance was compromised by a reduced wingspan, two-stage landing gear, and bomb-bay design. It was replaced by the Handley Page Halifax and Avro Lancaster in 1943 but saw important second-line duty in glider-towing, paratroop drop, minelaying, and supply roles.

The Short Stirling, introduced by the Royal Air Force in 1941, held a significant role as the inaugural four-engine heavy bomber during World War II. However, its early performance was marred by several challenges. Firstly, its reduced wingspan imposed severe limitations on its maximum altitude capability, restricting its operational range. Secondly, the two-stage landing gear proved to be dangerously fragile, increasing the risk of accidents during takeoff and landing. Additionally, the bomb-bay design was inadequate for carrying large-scale blockbuster bombs, further compromising its strategic bombing capabilities.

These limitations left the Short Stirling particularly vulnerable to isolation and dispatch by enemy night fighters within the bomber stream. Consequently, it was withdrawn from Britain's strategic bombing campaign over occupied Europe by November 1943. In its place, the more effective Handley Page Halifax and Avro Lancaster took over. Nevertheless, the Short Stirling continued to serve in important secondary roles, including glider-towing, paratroop drop, minelaying, and supply missions.

After the war, the Stirling saw further service in post-WWII duties, including passenger transport until the late 1940s. This book aims to provide a concise and visually engaging account of the Short Stirling's history, highlighting its contributions to the RAF's efforts during World War II and its enduring legacy.
