It is disheartening to reflect on the past and acknowledge that I never stood a chance. The realization that my entire childhood was stolen from me is a painful truth. I never had the opportunity to experience the carefree and innocent years of being a child.
Shaneda Daly's journey began when her father, who was an ex-army and prison officer, started grooming her when she was just six years old. For over a decade, he subjected her to daily sexual abuse and rape. The emotional and physical toll on Shaneda was immense, as she lived in a house of doom.
Despite the unbearable pain, Shaneda found the strength to confront her father and seek help. After admitting his crimes to his family, he agreed to leave home in search of treatment. However, his promise of change was short-lived, as he returned after only a year, seeking to continue his abuse.
Shaneda, with no other options, had to accept his return. However, her hopes of a new beginning were shattered when he attempted to abuse her once more. This time, Shaneda was determined to take action and contacted the police. With their support, she was able to leave home and reclaim her power.
Decades later, in 2011, Shaneda's father was finally convicted on 227 counts of abuse. The average number of convictions for such crimes is typically less than 20. Shaneda's story is a testament to the resilience of survivors and their unwavering pursuit of justice.
Today, Shaneda is a campaigner for other victims of abuse. She bravely shares her story, hoping to inspire others to break the silence and seek help. Her journey is a reminder that there is hope and that survivors can overcome even the most devastating circumstances.
