- More about Smart Meters: Artificial Intelligence to Support Proactive Management of Energy Consumption
The book emphasizes the importance of equipping buildings with smart meters to improve energy prediction and optimization within smart grids. It highlights the results of the European Upper Rhine INTERREG project SMI, which connects artificial intelligence and micro-societal analysis to address social, legal, environmental, and technical aspects of the transition to clean energy. The book introduces an intelligent tool that enables consumers to collect and predict their electrical appliance consumption, while ensuring privacy and enhancing the security of smart meters in a heterogeneous network.

The importance of equipping buildings with smart meters cannot be overstated when it comes to improving the prediction of energy costs within smart grids and helping end-users optimize their energy consumption. This comprehensive book delves into the results of the European Upper Rhine INTERREG project SMI (www.smi.uha.fr), which seamlessly integrates artificial intelligence and micro-societal analysis. Spanning multiple disciplines, including social, legal, environmental, and technical aspects, this project aims to address the challenges and opportunities of the transition to clean energy.
One of the critical factors for the successful transition to clean energy is the flexibility of the power grid. A flexible grid requires a constant flow of data about the network and its demand, while clients who produce electrical power can actively participate in demand response if they are informed about the power needs of their appliances. "If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it," a common management saying, also holds true for the area of energy efficiency. Without a clear understanding of their energy usage, consumers are unable to take steps to reduce their consumption.
To address this challenge, a new intelligent tool is presented that is more efficient, safe, and acceptable to consumers. This tool enables users to collect and predict the consumption of their electrical appliances, all while ensuring the anonymity of their consumption information before it is relayed to the energy supplier. In parallel, innovative techniques are being evaluated to enhance the security level of smart meters in highly heterogeneous networks.
By equipping buildings with smart meters, we can empower end-users to make informed decisions about their energy consumption, leading to reduced costs, increased sustainability, and a more efficient power grid. The integration of artificial intelligence and micro-societal analysis in the SMI project provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics of energy consumption and offers a roadmap for a greener and more sustainable future.
