- More about SME Responses to Climate Change in Southeast Asia
SMEs in the ASEAN region are significantly contributing to emissions generation and future reduction. A recent quantitative assessment revealed that most respondents are highly concerned about climate change and are taking steps to reduce emissions, such as reducing air conditioning, electricity, recycling, and installing low-energy lighting. Micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) constitute a significant segment of the business landscape within the ASEAN region, accounting for approximately 97% of all active business entities. These enterprises play a vital role in contributing to both greenhouse gas emissions and the pursuit of future reductions. To gain insights into how SMEs are addressing climate change, a comprehensive quantitative assessment was conducted across multiple countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam. The findings revealed a profound level of concern among the respondents regarding climate change.
A remarkable majority of over 90% of firms reported implementing various measures to reduce their carbon footprint. These actions primarily involve straightforward strategies such as optimizing air conditioning and electricity usage, implementing recycling programs, and installing energy-efficient lighting systems. While these measures may appear modest, they represent significant steps taken by SMEs to mitigate their environmental impact.
Furthermore, SMEs are actively considering their future preparedness in the face of extreme weather events. Common intentions include reducing emissions, developing comprehensive disaster plans, and reassessing business insurance policies to ensure resilience against climate-related risks.
The findings from this assessment underscore the crucial role that SMEs play in addressing climate change. By implementing sustainable practices and taking proactive measures, these enterprises can contribute to the overall efforts of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and building a more sustainable future.
