  • More about Somerset Traction

The main route to Devon and Cornwall passes through Somerset, with routes from Bristol and Westbury converging at Cogload Junction. The principal passenger train operator is Great Western Railway (GWR), but Arriva CrossCountry runs a regular service to Exeter and Plymouth/Paignton/Penzance from the north. South West Trains operates the Waterloo to Exeter route, but has recently started to encroach on GWR territory. Freight traffic to the South West has become sparse, but Taunton still retains Fairwater Yard and is home to the Network Rails High Output Renewals Train. Somerset is also home to the longest preserved railway in the country, the West Somerset Railway (WSR).

The primary thoroughfare to Devon and Cornwall traverses through Somerset, with routes originating from Bristol and Westbury converging at Cogload Junction, situated approximately 5 miles east of Taunton. To the south of the county, the former London & South Western Railway route extends from London Waterloo to Exeter via Yeovil Junction. Castle Cary, located on the segment from Westbury to Taunton, serves as the junction for the route leading to Yeovil Pen Mill and subsequently to Weymouth. Great Western Railway (GWR) remains the principal passenger train operator throughout the county, offering regular services to Exeter and Plymouth/Paignton/Penzance from the north. While South West Trains solely operates the Waterloo to Exeter route, it has recently begun to encroach on GWR territory by introducing services to Yeovil and Weymouth from Salisbury via Warminster and Frome. Freight traffic to the South West has experienced a decline in recent years, although Taunton still maintains Fairwater Yard, located to the west of the station, and is home to the Network Rails High Output Renewals Train, operated by Freightliner Heavy Haul. Moreover, Somerset boasts the distinction of housing the longest preserved railway in the country, known as the West Somerset Railway (WSR). Mark Jamieson's captivating illustrations, featuring previously unpublished images, vividly depict the diverse range of traffic that Somerset has witnessed throughout its history, encompassing summer holiday trains, railtours, and freight operations.
