Sino-African relations have gained geo-strategic interest, with China's assistance to African nations. This study focuses on South African foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mainland China, investigating key institutional factors and business strategies. Ten real-life case studies are analyzed using a three-dimensional institutional model to explore business success and failure in the Sino-South African context.

Sino-African relations have garnered significant geo-strategic interest in recent years, with a primary focus on China's assistance to and growing involvement in the economic development of numerous African nations. However, there has been relatively less emphasis on Africans in China and the role of African actors in the Chinese economy, despite their crucial importance to bilateral economic relations. This study is a pioneering effort to examine South African foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mainland China. Its primary objective is to identify and specify the key institutional factors that have influenced the success or failure of South African firms in entering and operating within the Chinese market. Additionally, the research explores the characteristics and processes that have shaped South African firms' business strategies to navigate the complex institutional environment of China.

The study's primary empirical contribution consists of ten real-life case studies drawn from a diverse cross-section of South African business actors who have pursued opportunities in the Chinese market. These case studies are critically analyzed using a three-dimensional institutional model that examines the role of formal and informal business processes and practices in influencing business success and failure in the Sino-South African context.

This study will be of immense value to researchers, academics, policymakers, Sino-African business practitioners, and advanced students in the fields of international business, political economy, strategy, and Asian and African studies. It provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics of Sino-African relations, sheds light on the challenges and opportunities faced by South African firms in the Chinese market, and contributes to the ongoing discourse on international business and economic development in the region.
