Maritime Southeast Asia has been a highly interconnected region since the late first millennium CE, with societies and states in the region maintaining economic and diplomatic relations with China and Japan in the east, as well as the Indian Sub-Continent and Middle East in the west. This global interconnectedness was facilitated by merchant and shipping networks that originated from within and outside Southeast Asia, leading to the development of a trans-regional economy by the early second millennium CE. As a result, sojourning populations began to appear in Maritime Southeast Asia, culminating in records of Chinese and Indian settlers in places such as Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, and the Gulf of Siam by the mid-first millennium CE. At the same time, pockets of society in China, India, and the Middle East began appropriating information about products harvested in Southeast Asia, leading to the production of new knowledge andusages for these products in these markets.

This interconnectedness was further enhanced by the spread of religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam, which facilitated trade and cultural exchange between different regions. The Silk Road, a network of trade routes that connected China with the Mediterranean world, played a significant role in this connectivity, allowing for the exchange of goods, ideas, and religions between East and West. The maritime trade routes that followed the Silk Road, such as the Malacca Strait and the Indian Ocean, also contributed to the development of Maritime Southeast Asia as a hub of economic and cultural activity.
