Southern fiction delves into the rich tapestry of the American South, employing its literary legacy as a guiding compass. By centering its attention on the environments that have nurtured the imaginations of 20th-century Southern writers throughout their formative years or throughout their illustrious careers, the genre offers a unique perspective on the region's history. The photographs featured in this series capture the essence of the Deep South, showcasing domestic settings, vernacular architecture, and rural landscapes that evoke a profound connection with the region's past, culture, and atmosphere.

From 2018 to 2021, photographer Tema Stauffer embarked on a series of road trips to Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Her mission was to capture the essence of the settings associated with renowned writers such as Flannery OConnor, Alice Walker, Truman Capote, Harper Lee, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Tennessee Williams, and Richard Wright. The resulting series, titled "Roots of Southern Fiction," presents a visual journey through the former homes, significant sites, and surrounding landscapes that shaped these writers' fiction.

By delving into the roots of these great writers, the series explores the depth and complexity of the South through the evocative settings that defined their experiences and voices. Each photograph serves as a portal to a world where literature and landscape intertwine, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Southern history and culture. Through the lens of Tema Stauffer's artistry, the series offers a glimpse into the souls of these iconic writers and the landscapes that inspired their literary masterpieces.
