  • More about Sovereignty as a Vocation in Hobbes's Leviathan: New foundations, Statecraft, and Virtue

This book argues that Hobbess political philosophy in Leviathan is based on wise, generous, loving, sincere, just, and valiant statecraft, aiming to realize natural justice through eminent and other-regarding virtue. It responds to limitations in his early works and taps into ancient political and philosophical ideas, particularly the orator founder.

This book contends that the cornerstone of Hobbess political philosophy in Leviathan rests on a wise, generous, loving, sincere, just, and valiant statecraft, characterized by eminent and other-regarding virtue. It suggests that the virtues of the natural person holding the office of sovereign permeate Hobbess political philosophy, shaping both his theory of new foundations and his critiques of law and obligation. These aspects of Hobbess thought are novel to Leviathan, addressing shortcomings in his earlier works, Elements and De Cive, exposed by the civil wars and the regicide of Charles I. While novel, this book argues that they draw upon ancient political and philosophical ideas, particularly the enigmatic figure of the orator founder.
