Colonialism advanced its project of territorial expansion by changing the meaning of borders and space. Mohit Chandna's book analyzes the depiction of ever-changing borders and spatial grammar within the colonial project and examines the ongoing resistance to the spatial legacies of colonial practices. Literature and film become sites that register colonial spatial paradigms and advance competing narratives that fracture the dominance of these borders, showing that colonialism is not a finished project relegated to our past.

Colonialism sought to expand its territorial ambitions by redefining the boundaries and spatial concepts. The colonial project propagated a unipolar spatial narrative, perceiving the colonies as an extension of European borders. In his monograph, Mohit Chandna delves into narratives of spatial conflicts in French and Francophone literature and film from the nineteenth to the early twenty-first century. Chandna examines the portrayal of shifting borders and spatial grammar within the colonial project, drawing from literary works by Jules Verne, Ananda Devi, and Patrick Chamoiseau, as well as film by Michael Haneke. By analyzing these representations, he also explores the enduring resistance to the spatial legacies of colonial practices, which continue to enforce colonial borders as omnipresent forces. Literature and film become platforms for registering colonial spatial paradigms and advancing alternative narratives that challenge the dominance of these borders. Through its comprehensive analyses, Spatial Boundaries, Abounding Spaces demonstrates that colonialism is not a historical relic confined to the past. Rather, it persists in the present and exerts its power through the borders that shape our world. A free ebook is available at OAPEN Library, JSTOR, and Project Muse.
