  • More about Speak Out!: The Brixton Black Women's Group

We came to Britain in search of better opportunities or to get some of the wealth which had been misappropriated from the Caribbean, but what did we find? Speak Out brings together the writings of Brixton Black Women's Group for the first time, in a landmark collection. Established in response to the lack of interest in women's issues experienced in male-dominated Black organizations, the Brixton Black Women's Group sought to create a distinct space where women of African and Asian descent could meet to focus on political, social, and cultural issues as they affected black women. BBWG published its own newsletter, Speak Out, which kept alive the debate about the relevance of feminism to black politics and provided a black women's perspective on immigration, housing, health, and culture.

We embarked on a journey to Britain, driven by the desire for better opportunities or to reclaim the wealth that had been unjustly taken from the Caribbean. However, what awaited us in reality was a complex and multifaceted reality that defied our expectations.

In our search for a better life, we found ourselves drawn to Britain, a land of promise and opportunity. We imagined that we would find a place where our skills and hard work would be valued, and where we could achieve our dreams and aspirations.

Yet, as we immersed ourselves in the British culture, we began to realize that our journey was not as straightforward as we had anticipated. We encountered a society that was deeply rooted in its traditions and customs, and where the lines between different cultures and communities were often blurred.

One of the most significant challenges we faced was the lack of interest in women's issues within male-dominated Black organizations. We recognized the need for a space where women of African and Asian descent could come together to focus on political, social, and cultural issues that affected us as black women.

This led to the establishment of the Brixton Black Women's Group, a pioneering organization that sought to create a distinct space where black women could voice their opinions and advocate for change. The group was founded in response to the lack of representation and recognition that black women faced in mainstream politics and society.

One of the key achievements of the Brixton Black Women's Group was the publication of their newsletter, Speak Out. This newsletter served as a platform for the group to raise awareness about the relevance of feminism to black politics and provide a black women's perspective on a range of issues, including immigration, housing, health, and culture.

Through Speak Out, the Brixton Black Women's Group challenged the dominant narratives and stereotypes that were often perpetuated about black women. They emphasized the importance of intersectionality, recognizing that our experiences as black women were shaped by a multitude of factors, including race, gender, class, and sexuality.

The group also worked tirelessly to address the systemic inequalities that black women faced in Britain. They campaigned for better access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, and advocated for policies that would promote gender equality and social justice.

Despite the progress that has been made in recent years, there is still a long way to go in terms of achieving true equality for black women in Britain. The group continues to raise awareness about the issues that we face and to work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

In conclusion, our journey to Britain was driven by the desire for better opportunities and the reclaiming of wealth that had been misappropriated from the Caribbean. However, what we found in reality was a complex and multifaceted society that was deeply rooted in its traditions and customs.

The Brixton Black Women's Group was a pioneering organization that sought to create a distinct space where black women could voice their opinions and advocate for change. Through the publication of Speak Out, the group challenged the dominant narratives and stereotypes that were often perpetuated about black women and worked tirelessly to address the systemic inequalities that we faced.

While there is still a long way to go in terms of achieving true equality for black women in Britain, the work of the Brixton Black Women's Group serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. We must continue to fight for a more inclusive and equitable society, and to ensure that the voices of black women are heard and valued in all aspects of life.
