Quanzhou, also known as Zayton, holds a captivating history that spans from ancient times to the present. It was once the bustling port of departure for Marco Polo and the ultimate destination for Columbus in China. Beyond its strategic importance, Quanzhou stands out for its remarkable tolerance and diversity. During the Middle Ages, this fabled "City of Light" boasted a remarkable array of religious institutions. It had 7 mosques catering to the 40,000 Muslims residing in the city, some of whom even held positions in government. Additionally, Quanzhou housed 3 Franciscan cathedrals, partly funded by the emperor himself. These cathedrals were a testament to the city's embrace of different faiths, including Judaism, Nestorian Christianity, Hinduism, Taoism, Manicheanism, Jains, and more. As Franciscan Bishop Andrew of Perugia expressed in 1322, it was truly remarkable that within this vast empire, people from every nation under heaven and every sect were allowed to live freely according to their creed.
In recognition of its historical significance, Quanzhou was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. Today, the city serves as a hub for the Belt and Road Initiative, a modern-day revival of the ancient Silk Road. This initiative, inspired by the ancient city's rich heritage, aims to foster economic cooperation and cultural exchange between China and its global trade partners. Quanzhou's values of tolerance and diversity continue to resonate with the world, making it a shining example of how historical legacies can shape the future.
