The sociology of sports in the Middle East has received relatively less attention compared to other regions globally. This comprehensive volume aims to foster a greater focus on this important topic. Here, a collection of papers is presented, exploring various aspects of the sociology of sports in the Middle East. While most papers primarily discuss football (soccer) in Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries, they also touch upon other sports. Some papers take a historical or political approach, while others adopt a more sociological perspective. The papers address various themes, including the relationship between organized sports and fans, the unique roles of youngsters and women in sports, and the significance of sports in understanding culture and society as indicators of modernization and other social changes. Sportive competitions evoke strong passions related to issues such as gender, class, and nationality, while also raising questions about leadership both on and off the field, as well as the economic impact of the games. It is evident that further research is necessary to deepen our understanding of the sociology of sports in the Middle East.
