  • More about Stackridge On Track: Every Album, Every Song

Stackridge was a band of West Country troubadours in the early 1970s, blending folk, classical, progressive rock, jazz, pop, and music hall. This book follows the core four songwriters, Andy Davis, James Warren, Mutter Slater, and Crun Walter, through their ever-diverging and remerging paths, spanning half a century of recording. The band's 1970s heyday was marked by personnel reshuffles, and after their dissolution in 1976, James Warren and Andy Davis formed The Korgis, who scored worldwide hits with If I Had You and Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime.

In the early 1970s, a peculiar phenomenon emerged on the vibrant U.K. gig circuit, taking the form of a band of West Country troubadours known as Stackridge. Their musical repertoire showcased an extraordinary fusion of styles, encompassing a diverse range of genres such as folk, classical, progressive rock, jazz, pop, and music hall. This captivating journey is meticulously documented in Alan Draper's book, delving into the ever-evolving and intertwining paths of the core four Stackridge songwriters: Andy Davis, James Warren, Mutter Slater, and Crun Walter, both within and outside the confines of the band. Spanning a remarkable half-century of recording, the book commences with their eclectic debut album, Stackridge, in 1971. It proceeds through a series of captivating musical avenues, interspersed with occasional detours, culminating in the band's dissolution in 1976. However, the story does not end there. James Warren and Andy Davis, after the disbandment of Stackridge, joined forces to form The Korgis. The Korgis achieved global success with hits like "If I Had You" and the widely covered standard "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime." The book also encompasses The Korgis, Mutter Slater Band, and solo projects, leading us to the present day, where Stackridge has returned for a second career, receiving a heartfelt hero's welcome from their dedicated fan base.
