Stars are not born, they are made. This applies not only to the sports and entertainment industries, but also to museum objects. The art world provides many examples of this.
But it also happens with collections in ethnological museums: some become famous, achieve a certain level of fame or even become international icons, while others spend their "museum life" largely unnoticed in the depot. How this comes about and what factors determine whether an object becomes a star or a loser is the subject of this research. Using well-known and unknown African and Oceanic collections from the Museum of Five Continents in Munich, this research investigates their "making-of" and the dynamics in their perception, interpretation and valuation.
