- More about State Formation through Emulation: The East Asian Model
East Asian countries developed centralized, bureaucratic administrations based on emulating China's model, driven by a desire for stability and peace rather than conflict. War was rare, and there was no power balance with regular existential threats, leading to the longevity of the dynasties. This challenges the universal assumption of war and state-making in Europe and demonstrates how countries in East Asia interacted and learned from each other and China to develop strong capacities and stable borders.

State formation in East Asia was not driven by war or preparations for war, but rather by emulation of China, the hegemon with a civilizational influence. This led to the rapid formation of centralized, bureaucratically administered, territorial governments in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. These countries engaged in state-building not to engage in conflict or to suppress revolt, but rather to develop strong capacities and stable borders.
We challenge the assumption that the European experience with war and state-making was universal and broaden the scope of state formation in East Asia beyond the study of China itself. We show how countries in the region interacted and learned from each other and China to develop strong capacities and stable borders.
The longevity of the East Asian dynasties is evidence of the peacefulness of their neighborhood and their internal stability. This was due to a combination of factors, including the relative lack of conflict, the presence of a stable political system, and the development of strong cultural and economic institutions.
In conclusion, state formation in East Asia was not driven by war or preparations for war, but rather by emulation of China, the hegemon with a civilizational influence. This led to the rapid formation of centralized, bureaucratically administered, territorial governments in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. These countries engaged in state-building not to engage in conflict or to suppress revolt, but rather to develop strong capacities and stable borders. The longevity of the East Asian dynasties is evidence of the peacefulness of their neighborhood and their internal stability.
