  • More about Still Running: My Life as the First Black Football Player in the SEC

Nathaniel Nate Northington was the first African American to play college football in the Southeastern Conference, and his story is told in the book Still Running: My Life as the First Black Football Player in the SEC. Northington and other African American football players fought on the gridiron throughout the civil rights movement to achieve success both on and off the field. His athletic ability, character, and scholastic achievement took him to the front lines of the fight, compelling Kentucky Governor Ned Breathitt and UK president John Oswald to select him to help lead the way for integration in Kentucky college football. His brotherly friendship with Greg Page and subsequently Page's devastating death propelled him forward in his goal of integrating the SEC.

Nathaniel Nate Northington, the first African American to play college football in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), made a significant impact on sports more than fifty years ago. His journey began on September 30, 1967, when he played for the University of Kentucky against Ole Miss. However, his life took a tragic turn when his best friend and roommate, Greg Page, tragically passed away. Northington's story is chronicled in his book, Still Running: My Life as the First Black Football Player in the SEC. In the book, Northington recounts his experiences as an African American football player during the civil rights movement. He shares how he and other players fought for equality both on and off the field. Northington's journey began in hardworking, self-reliant neighborhoods in Louisville's Little Africa and later in Newburg. His parents provided a strong, supportive foundation, and his childhood experiences shaped his desire to confront racial injustice and violence. Northington's athletic ability, character, and scholastic achievement led him to the front lines of the fight for integration in Kentucky college football. Kentucky Governor Ned Breathitt and UK president John Oswald selected him to help lead the way for integration. Northington's story is not just about integration within college football; it is an honest and inspirational testament to a life defined by his determination to make a difference. Northington's book includes new material and an updated history addressing the ongoing racial justice movement. His story is a reminder of the progress that has been made and the work that still needs to be done to achieve equality.
