Strathtay Scottish was a product of Scottish Bus Groups attempts to prepare for deregulation and privatisation in the mid-1980s, combining Midland Scottish and Northern Scottish. It was unsuccessful in its bid to buy the company during the privatisation, and Stagecoach would force it to abandon Perth.

Strathtay Scottish was a result of the Scottish Bus Groups efforts to prepare for deregulation and potential privatization in the mid-1980s. It merged a portion of Midland Scottish, centered around Perthshire, with a section of Northern Scottish headquartered in Dundee and Angus. During the privatization of the Scottish Bus Group, Strathtay management attempted to acquire the company but ultimately failed. The winning bidder was the Yorkshire Traction Company, based in Barnsley, which was the sole instance of a company not headquartered in Scotland acquiring a portion of the Scottish Bus Group. Ultimately, Stagecoach forced the company to abandon Perth, and subsequently, the Yorkshire Traction Group was acquired by Stagecoach.
