Shannen Dee Williams presents the first comprehensive history of Black Catholic nuns in the United States, highlighting their role as unsung prophets of Catholicism and democracy. Through oral histories and previously sealed Church records, Williams reveals how the dominant narratives of women's religious lives and Catholic commitments to racial and gender justice are transformed when the experiences of African American nuns are acknowledged. For Black Catholic women and girls, embracing the celibate religious state was a radical act of resistance against white supremacy and the sexual violence inherent in chattel slavery and segregation. Williams showcases the pioneering roles of Black sisters, such as Sister Mary Antona Ebo, who was the sole Black member of the inaugural delegation of Catholic sisters to participate in the Black voting rights marches of 1965 in Selma, Alabama. These nuns were not only religious leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, and desegregation foot soldiers but also Black Power activists and womanist theologians. Williams draws attention to Catholic women's religious life as a bastion of white supremacy and racial segregation, making it a crucial battleground in the long African American freedom struggle.
