- More about Supporting College Students of Immigrant Origin: New Insights from Research, Policy, and Practice
Over 5 million college students in the US are of immigrant origin, making up nearly one-third of all students. Despite this, there is limited research on their specific experiences of postsecondary education. This book addresses this gap by examining how students of immigrant origin navigate the road to, through, and beyond higher education, with evidence-based implications for policy, research, and practice.

Over 5 million college students in the United States, nearly one-third of the student population, have immigrant origins, either as the children of immigrant parents or guardians or as immigrants themselves. These students have played a significant role in the growth of higher education enrollment in the 21st century, accounting for almost 60% of the increase. However, there is limited research specifically focused on the experiences of these students in postsecondary education, and similar gaps are evident in higher education policy and practice. While college campuses are making efforts to create more inclusive spaces, discussions about climate and student care often overlook the journeys of students of immigrant origin.
To address this glaring omission, this book brings together 20 chapters written by over 50 contributors. The authors explore the experiences of students of immigrant origin as they navigate the road to, through, and beyond higher education, while also addressing evidence-based implications for policy, research, and practice.
The book begins by providing an overview of the demographic and educational landscape of students of immigrant origin in the United States. It highlights the diverse backgrounds, languages, and cultures of these students and the challenges they face in accessing and succeeding in higher education. The authors then delve into the specific experiences of these students, including their academic challenges, financial struggles, cultural adaptation, and experiences of discrimination and marginalization.
The book also examines the policies and practices that affect students of immigrant origin, such as immigration laws, student aid programs, and campus policies related to diversity and inclusion. The authors argue that these policies need to be more inclusive and equitable to support the success of students of immigrant origin. They suggest that policymakers, educators, and practitioners should prioritize the needs of these students and work towards creating a more welcoming and supportive higher education environment.
In addition to examining the experiences of students of immigrant origin, the book also provides insights into the research and evidence-based practices that can support their success. The authors discuss the importance of culturally responsive teaching, bilingual education, and support services for students with language barriers and other challenges. They also highlight the importance of addressing the systemic barriers that prevent students of immigrant origin from accessing and succeeding in higher education, such as poverty, limited access to education, and discrimination.
Overall, this book is a valuable resource for policymakers, educators, and practitioners who work with students of immigrant origin. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the experiences of these students and the policies and practices that can support their success. By addressing this glaring omission in research and practice, the book aims to contribute to the development of more inclusive and equitable higher education systems that serve the needs of all students.
