  • More about Supports in Roman Marble Sculpture: Workshop Practice and Modes of Viewing

Figural and non-figural supports in Roman marble sculpture are essential for understanding the tastes and expectations of those who commissioned, bought, and displayed them in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. This study challenges previous conceptions of Roman visual values and traditions and provides a comprehensive investigation of non-figural supports.

Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 279 pages

Publisher: Cambridge University Press

Figural and non-figural supports are a common feature of Roman marble sculpture, appearing in sculptures of all sizes and qualities. Contrary to modern notions of beauty, completeness, and visual harmony, these elements, particularly non-figural struts, have been dismissed by scholars as mere safeguards for production and transport. However, a close examination of these features reveals the preferences and expectations of those who commissioned, purchased, and displayed marble sculptures throughout the Mediterranean in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. This study, the first comprehensive investigation of non-figural supports in Roman sculpture, draws on a vast body of examples, Greek and Latin literary sources, and modern theories of visual culture. It challenges previous conceptions of Roman visual values and traditions and expands our understanding of the Roman reception of Greek art.
