Survival, the esteemed bimonthly journal published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), sets out to challenge conventional wisdom and present fresh, often controversial perspectives on the most pressing strategic issues of our time. In this edition, the journal delves into a range of thought-provoking topics, offering readers a comprehensive analysis of the global landscape.

Daniel Deudney and G. John Ikenberry, in their article, argue that liberal internationalism is better suited to the contemporary global realities than the Quincy-coalition restraint. They contend that liberal internationalism emphasizes the importance of promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, which are essential in addressing the complex challenges of the 21st century. The authors argue that the Quincy-coalition approach, which emphasizes containment and stability, is outdated and insufficient in the face of emerging threats and challenges.

James Crabtree, in his piece, explores why the West's "Build Back Better World" partnership will face significant challenges in competing with China's Belt and Road Initiative. Crabtree argues that the West's approach, which focuses on economic development and infrastructure investment, lacks the comprehensive vision and strategic depth required to counter China's ambitious global agenda. He suggests that the West needs to adopt a more holistic and integrated approach that encompasses political, economic, and security dimensions to effectively compete with China.

Joelien Pretorius and Tom Sauer, in their article, argue that if states are serious about nuclear disarmament, they should abandon the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and join the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). The authors argue that the NPT has failed to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons and has not been effective in promoting disarmament. They suggest that the CTBT, which prohibits all nuclear testing, is a more robust and effective framework for achieving nuclear disarmament.

Sameer Lalwani and Tyler Sagerstrom, in their analysis, examine the India-Russia defense partnership and its implications for US policy. The authors argue that the partnership represents a significant shift in the global balance of power and has the potential to reshape the regional and global security landscape. They suggest that the US needs to engage with India and Russia to promote stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

In addition to these thought-provoking articles, this edition of Survival features eight more thought-provoking pieces, as well as our regular Book Reviews and Noteworthy column. The journal is edited by Dr. Dana Allin, with Managing Editor Jonathan Stevenson, Associate Editor Carolyn West, and Assistant Editor Jessica Watson contributing to its production.

Survival continues to be a vital source of insights and analysis on the most critical strategic issues of our time, providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of the global landscape and challenging them to think critically and develop innovative solutions.
