  • More about Sweet Anaesthetist

Jay Whittaker's second collection, Sweet Anaesthetist, explores themes of origin, biological heritage, and the societies we are born into. It draws from the landscapes of the Hebrides and East Lothian and the natural world, and discusses the frailty of the body and the task of living with cancer. The collection culminates in the prose poetry sequence, Egg Case, a vibrant and transfixing plunge into the stuff of life itself.

Jay Whittaker's debut collection, "Wristwatch," was awarded the 2018 Saltire Prize for Poetry Book of the Year. In this eagerly awaited follow-up, Jay delves into themes of origin, exploring the question of what shapes us most: our biological heritage or the societies we are born into? Her work draws deeply from the landscapes of the Hebrides and East Lothian, as well as the natural world in general. However, it often returns to the fleshly bodies we inhabit and through which we experience everything, as in her debut, "Sweet Anaesthetist." In this collection, Jay discusses the frailty of the body and the task of living with cancer, but she also turns outward to beings encountered and too easily overlooked in the rush of the day-to-day: friends, acquaintances, and the smallest creatures with which we share our days. Culminating in the prose poetry sequence, "Egg Case," "Sweet Anaesthetist" is a vibrant, transfixing plunge into the stuff of life itself.
