Baldomero Espartero, born in a remote Spanish village in the late 18th century, lived a life reminiscent of a fictional character crafted by Stendhal or Gabriel García Márquez. At the age of seventy-five, he was offered, but declined, the throne of an industrializing nation. Throughout his remarkable career, he battled against Napoleon, Simón Bolívar, and other Latin American independence leaders; led a seven-year civil war; served as regent for the child queen Isabella II; and spent years in exile in England. Espartero ruled as prime minister and also acquired numerous noble titles, including that of prince, typically reserved for members of the royal family. By his sixties, Espartero had become an almost mythical figure.
The Sword of Luchana, based on extensive archival research in Spain, Argentina, and the United Kingdom, delves into the public and private lives of this quintessential 19th-century hero. Adrian Shubert lends his voice to the masses of ordinary Spaniards who revered Espartero as the embodiment of liberty and freedom, and to Jacinta Martínez de Sicilia y Santa Cruz, his wife of more than fifty years, who played a pivotal role in his public career. The book offers unprecedented access to Espartero's personal papers and unfolds against the backdrop of wars and revolutions in Spain and its American empire. It is a captivating account of a pivotal period of conflict, revolution, and political and social transformation.
