Photography is an eternal moment that transcends the boundaries of time, present, and past. Lieko Shiga, a renowned photographer, creates intimate portraits that blend her personal experiences with grand mythologies, creating surreal and fantastical images. Her work, devoid of digital retouching, evokes the twilight zone between dream and reality.

This captivating volume showcases her series "RASEN KAIGAN (Spiral Coast)" from 2008 to 2012, which captures the essence and history of the village of Kitakama in Japan, both before and after the devastating 2011 tsunami. Shiga's photographs, which are held in museum collections worldwide, encapsulate the spirit and resilience of the people and the place.

In 2012, she received the Higashikawa Prize for new artists, and in 2021, she was honored with the Tokyo Contemporary Art Award. The Tate Photography Series, a celebration of photography by artists in the Tate collection, presents some of the most significant photographers of our time. Each book focuses on an individual photographer, featuring a specially curated selection of images and an introduction by a Tate curator, accompanied by a conversation about their practice.

Series Two, titled "Ecology and Environment," delves into the intricate relationship between humans and the natural world, environment, and the changing climate. These photographers explore various aspects of our connection with the environment, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities we face in this rapidly evolving world.

Through the lens of Lieko Shiga and other talented photographers featured in the Tate Photography Series, we are invited to contemplate the beauty, fragility, and significance of our planet, and to appreciate the profound impact of photography in capturing and preserving the essence of our existence.
