The COVID-19 crisis was a sudden, unexpected, and highly unpredictable event that had a profound impact on the field of education. Educators were forced to rethink their pedagogies, policies, practices, technologies, and strategies in response to the pandemic, leading to significant changes in the way that language learning and teaching is conducted. In the months and years following the outbreak, educational institutions were forced to adapt to new ways of working, with long-term implications for language learning and teaching. Much of the early research in language education that emerged as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic focused on its negative effects, such as the lack of infrastructure and preparedness, inequitable access for educators and learners, perceived lowered outcomes, and emotional burdens. In this volume, we capture some of the lessons learned during and as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in order to move forward as a field with intention and purpose, and to take advantage of any crisis-prompted innovation. The volume aims to provide implications for other current and future challenges and crises that require our attention in language teaching and technology. Contributions will bring additional depth to the pandemic discussion in each of the four parts: Emergency Response, Problem Solving, Outcomes, and By-Products.
