This captivating study delves into the lives of the Mexican soldiers and Texian volunteers who engaged in three pivotal battles during the Texas Revolution. Fueled by unrest across Mexico, a revolt erupted in Texas in 1835, led by Anglophone and Tejano-speaking settlers, known as Texians. After suffering a defeat at Bexar in December 1835, Mexican troops retreated, only to be ordered back into Texas in early 1836. In this comprehensive volume, renowned US military history expert Ron Field examines in depth the three critical battles that unfolded.
On February 23, Mexican forces laid siege to the Texian forces at the Alamo, located in San Antonio de Bexar. In the subsequent battle on March 6, nearly all Texian defenders were killed. On March 19, Texian forces, en route to join the main Texian army, found themselves surrounded by Mexican troops at Coleto Creek. Following their surrender, approximately 340 Texian prisoners were brutally executed by Mexican soldiers in what became known as the Goliad Massacre.
The third and final battle to be explored in this study took place on April 21, when a Texian force launched a surprise attack on a larger Mexican army near the San Jacinto River. This decisive Texian victory marked the end of the Texas Revolution and secured the independence of the newly formed Republic of Texas.
Fully illustrated with specially commissioned artwork and mapping, many in color, this lively study offers a comprehensive exploration of the soldiers and volunteers who fought on both sides. Drawing upon the latest research, the book sheds light on the doctrine, tactics, weaponry, and combat record of the Texian and Mexican combatants who clashed in the early weeks of the emerging Republic of Texas.
