The All Jamaican Library, conceived by Jamaica's first Poet Laureate, Thomas MacDermot, holds a significant place in the country's literary history. This indigenous imprint was created with the aim of presenting works written by Jamaicans about Jamaica, while also ensuring affordability to cater to the local community. Despite its brief six-year run, MacDermot managed to publish two of his own novels, Beckas Buckra Baby (1904) and One Brown Girl and ¼ (1909), along with E.A. Dodds Maroon Medicine (1905), the pioneering collection of stories by a Caribbean writer. Additionally, he included W.A. Campbell's short story, Marguarite: A Story of the Earthquake (1907).
Beckas Buckra Baby, the first work in the series, unfolds as a tragic tale of race and class, following the life of Noel Maud Bronvola. Driven by her desire to honor her father after his passing, Noel dedicates herself to helping others, ultimately leading to unforeseen consequences. Maroon Medicine, the second installment, comprises a collection of short stories that capture the lighter aspects of daily Jamaican life. Inspired by the spider-trickster spirit Anansi, these stories celebrate West African folklore. Marguerite: A Story of the Earthquake, the third work, follows the tragic romance between George Hodlin and Marguerite. Nurturing Marguerite back to health and pursuing her affections, the young lovers' lives and aspirations are disrupted when an earthquake strikes Kingston. George, now away at school, and Marguerite, the apple of Herr Otto Tiezs eye, must navigate the challenges of love amidst the temptations of comfort and lasting security.
One Brown Girl and ¼, the fourth and final work, serves as a spiritual successor to Beckas Buckra Baby, focusing on Liberta Passley. Despite the passing of years, the story continues to resonate with readers, capturing the essence of Jamaican society and culture. The All Jamaican Library played a crucial role in establishing literary publishing in Jamaica and remains a testament to MacDermot's vision and contributions to the nation's literature.
