  • More about The Allman Brothers Band On Track: Every Album, Every Song

The Allman Brothers Band was a popular American band in 1973, headlining the Watkins Glen Summer Jam and releasing Brothers and Sisters, which was a number one for five weeks. They were named band of the year by Rolling Stone, but their story was volatile due to drug use and a court case. A three-album reunion in 1978-1982 rekindled some of the old fire, but their twentieth anniversary and second reformation in 1989 provided stability and acclaim. The passing of founder members Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman in 2017 ended the band's story.

The Allman Brothers Band, a legendary American rock band, reached unprecedented heights of popularity in 1973. They graced the stage as the headliners at the Watkins Glen Summer Jam, an event attended by an estimated staggering 600,000 people. Their album Brothers and Sisters not only claimed the top spot on the Billboard charts for five consecutive weeks that summer but also solidified their status as a musical force to be reckoned with. The single "Ramblin' Man" reached an impressive #2 position in October, further cementing their musical prowess. The group's remarkable journey was marked by both triumphs and challenges. Always a strong live draw since their formation in 1969, the two years preceding Watkins Glen saw them release one of the greatest live albums of all time and tragically lose two founding members in near-identical motorcycle accidents. Guitar genius Duane Allman, just 24 years old, was among the casualties. Amidst the turmoil, increased drug use and a contentious court case in 1976 further strained the band's unity. However, a three-album reunion between 1978 and 1982 brought a glimmer of hope, rekindling some of the old fire. It was their twentieth anniversary and second reformation in 1989 that truly provided stability and acclaim to the group. Unfortunately, the passing of founder members Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman in 2017 marked the definitive end of the band's remarkable story. Their legacy, spanning eleven studio albums, six contemporaneous live albums, and several box sets, includes timeless classics such as their self-titled debut, the sophomore masterpiece Idlewild South, their artistic and commercial breakthrough with At Fillmore East, and the awe-inspiring final album Hittin' The Note from 2003. The Allman Brothers Band's impact on rock music cannot be overstated, and their music continues to resonate with fans worldwide, cementing their place as one of the greatest bands in history.
