- More about The Bad German and the Good Italian: Removing the Guilt of the Second World War
Mussolini's Italy committed severe war crimes during the Axis War, but after 1945, a master narrative was created to distinguish Italy from Germany and avoid a punitive peace. This narrative portrayed the Italian people as opposing Mussolini's war and the Italian soldiers as saviors of Jews, placing all responsibility for the crimes on the Germans.
Format: Hardback

During the Axis War, which Germany fought alongside Italy,Mussolini's Italy committed severe war crimes, particularly in Yugoslavia and Greece. This troubling aspect of the fascist conflict, however, has been largely omitted from the national memory constructed after 1945. To differentiate Italy from its former German ally and prevent a punitive peace, the monarchist and anti-fascist ruling classes crafted a master narrative that emphasized the opposition of the Italian people to Mussolini's war and portrayed Italian soldiers as saviors of Jews. All blame for the crimes committed during the Axis war was conveniently shifted onto the Germans, who thus served as a convenient scapegoat for the national conscience.
