Zora Neale Hurston, a renowned anthropologist and writer, lived a complex life marked by tragedy and contradictions. After the Harlem Renaissance, her writing and popularity declined, and she faced financial struggles. In her book "The Chase and Ruins," Sharony Green explores an understudied period of Hurston's life: her time in Honduras in the late 1940s.
On the brink of an accusation that almost led to her suicide, Hurston fled to Honduras in search of a lost Mayan ruin. Despite her year-long journey, she never found the ruin she was chasing. However, by escaping the segregated Jim Crow South to Honduras, she avoided racist violence in the United States while still embracing her privilege as a US citizen in postwar Central America.
While in Honduras, Hurston wrote "Seraph on the Suwanee," her final novel, which featured white characters in an attempt to appeal to Hollywood's growing interest in crackerphilia and secure financial stability. In a letter to her editor, Hurston expressed that she may not have found the Mayan ruin she sought, but she found herself in Honduras.
Hurston's experience in Honduras offers valuable insights into the lives of Black women and the politics of postwar America, as well as America's complex relationship with Central America. Green unearths letters, diaries, and other documents to shed light on Hurston's thoughts and experiences during this period, providing a fresh perspective on her legacy.
