Rural Suffolk boasts a multitude of attractions for the discerning individual, yet the picturesque village of Debenham takes great pride in its Rotary Club. However, the once-thriving organization is currently experiencing a significant decline. Internal conflicts and petty rivalries have arisen among its members, overshadowed by moral dilemmas. Amidst this lively and diverse community, there stands George, an individual who defies the typical mold of a Rotarian. George's autism manifests in his directness, sometimes resulting in rudeness, as he struggles with interpreting body language. Despite these challenges, George has managed to carve out a successful and fulfilling life, finding happiness amidst the chaos. The other members of the Rotary Club often turn to him for stability and guidance.
However, the tides are about to change. The incoming President of the Rotary Club, driven by a desire for "the new," initiates a campaign to attract younger members and rejuvenate the club. He and his followers are relentless in their pursuit, while the traditionalists cling fiercely to the old, idiosyncratic ways. The stage is set for a fierce battle between these two factions.
In addition to his involvement with Rotary, George holds the position of chairman of the trustees of a small local charity that, in the modern world, holds little relevance. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he becomes embroiled in a bizarre and hilarious escapade that garners the attention of a national newspaper. The trustees, embarrassed by the situation, take action against George, and his Rotary club becomes entangled in the unfolding drama.
As if one misfortune wasn't enough, George's erstwhile friend, Alec Barton, turns into a nemesis and is subsequently suspended from the Rotary Club. Driven by alcohol and resentment, Barton embarks on a drunken rampage, wielding a shotgun, and targeting George. The consequences are catastrophic, leading to the dissolution of the club.
At this critical juncture, the future of the Rotary Club seems bleak. However, there remains a glimmer of hope. Can the organization recover from its setbacks and find a way forward? Only time will tell as the members grapple with the consequences of their actions and strive to rebuild a stronger and more united community.
