Neoliberalism is entering its death throes or at least starting to fundamentally mutate, providing us with a fifty-year cycle to reassess its rise and potential fall. This interdisciplinary collection seeks to reassess the significance and legacy of the global 1968 uprisings, arguing that returning to 1968 today may offer critical and comparative resources for thinking a way out of our current impasse.

In the aftermath of the emergence of new far-right populisms, the disintegration of global narratives of progress, and the unraveling of economic globalization, indications suggest that neoliberalism is either entering its final stages or embarking on a significant transformation. This presents us with a roughly fifty-year cycle to reevaluate the rise and potential decline of neoliberalism. By examining 1968 as one of the pivotal moments in this history, this interdisciplinary collection aims to reassess the significance and enduring impact of the global 1968 uprisings from the perspective of today. While these uprisings undoubtedly contributed to the end of various forms of oppression, the subsequent period witnessed the resurgence of class power to levels not witnessed since the 1920s. It is important to note that we refrain from drawing simplistic or direct lines of causation, as the sequence of the past fifty years reflects a complex and "lose-lose" scenario. Nevertheless, particularly in light of the current indicators of a crisis of neoliberal hegemony, this volume contends that revisiting 1968 in the present day holds the potential to provide critical and comparative insights for navigating our current impasse.
