The book examines the relationship between assimilation and fertility intentions for migrants and minorities in Europe, arguing that both groups assimilate through intercultural encounters and that fertility is influenced by assimilation. It uses data from the Generations and Gender Survey to compare Turkish migrants in Germany and the Turkish minority in Bulgaria, finding that the Turkish minority does not differ in fertility intentions from the majority, while Turkish migrants in Germany differ from German natives due to assimilation. Cultural dissimilarity explains differences in fertility between migrant and minority groups.

This book examines the relationship between assimilation and fertility intentions among migrants and minorities in Europe. Drawing on assimilation theory, it posits that both migrants and minorities undergo assimilation in intercultural encounters. Since fertility is a cultural aspect of assimilation, it is likely to be influenced by it. Consequently, theories on assimilation and fertility are integrated both theoretically and empirically. The empirical section utilizes data from the Generations and Gender Survey to compare Turkish migrants in Germany and the Turkish minority in Bulgaria. Cluster analyses are employed to identify six clusters in Germany and five clusters in Bulgaria, reflecting the heterogeneity of the groups. Comparing these clusters in terms of assimilation and fertility intentions reveals that the Turkish minority does not differ significantly from the majority in their fertility intentions. However, for Germany, Turkish migrants exhibit distinct fertility intentions compared to German natives, which are explained by assimilation, particularly structural characteristics. When comparing migrant and minority groups, differences in fertility exist and are attributed to cultural dissimilarity.
