Richard Edward Carey, born into a troubled family, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1945. His military journey saw him participate in significant historical events, including the Inchon and Chosin campaigns in Korea. He became a pilot, flying every aircraft in the Marine arsenal. Over his 38-year career, he witnessed and played a part in pivotal moments in history. Despite a high school wrestling injury that ended his participation in the Mercury-7 space program, Carey's military service was remarkable.
As a second lieutenant, he encountered General Douglas MacArthur during the 1950 Korean War. His intelligence contributions were instrumental in defending Hagaru-ri against the Chinese attack at the Chosin Reservoir. In 189 days of combat, Carey narrowly escaped death seven times, earning him the Silver Star and Bronze Star Medals.
In Vietnam, Carey flew 204 combat sorties, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and 16 Air Medals. His leadership and courage were praised by his subordinates. He stood up to Air Force generals in Vietnam and organized air defense for supply helicopters at Khe Sahn. During the 1975 Saigon evacuation, he countermanded a senior Naval officer's order, refusing to cease air operations and ensuring the safe evacuation of refugees.
In retirement, Carey served as a cabinet member for the governor of Ohio and managed the airport in his hometown of Columbus. He continued to support veterans, advocating for improved healthcare and accommodation for hospitalized veterans' families. He also led efforts to build a veterans cemetery in Dallas. Despite facing personal challenges, including the illness of his wife, Carey remained committed to honoring the memories of the Chosin Few and led the drive to build two Chosin Few memorials.
This biography provides a glimpse into the remarkable life of Richard Edward Carey, a Marine Corps veteran who made significant contributions to history and served his country with honor and bravery.
