  • More about The French Monarchical Commonwealth, 1356–1560

The Valois kings used a combination of ideologies to rule a monarchical commonwealth, but the Wars of Religion undid it. The French Monarchical Commonwealth, 1356–1560 shows how the Salic Law was related to everyday politics.

Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 319 pages

Publisher: Cambridge University Press

The Valois kings, who ruled a monarchical commonwealth for over two hundred years, relied on a complex blend of ideologies to govern their realm. This commonwealth, forged during the Hundred Years War, was built on the defense of the public good (bien public). However, it unraveled both practically and theoretically during the Wars of Religion. While certain kings sought to expand their royal prerogative, elites fought to maintain their control over local government. By examining town archives from more than twenty cities, alongside traditional sources of political theory, The French Monarchical Commonwealth, 1356–1560 establishes the relationship between seemingly abstract concepts such as the Salic Law and the realities of everyday politics.
