The Future of the Past is a biennial conference held in commemoration of the incorporation of Santa Ana de Los Ríos de Cuenca, Ecuador, as a World Heritage Site (WHS). Initiated in 2014 by the City Preservation Management research project (CPM) of the University of Cuenca, the conference aims to foster dialogue among stakeholders in the cultural heritage field. Since its inception, it has served as a platform for exchanging initiatives and promoting coordinated actions based on shared responsibility within the local context.
The third edition of the conference, held in 2023, marked the 20th anniversary of Santa Ana's listing as a WHS and the 10th year of CPM as the Southern host of the PRECOM³OS UNESCO Chair (Preventive Conservation, Maintenance, and Monitoring of Monuments and Sites). For the first time, the conference expanded its local scope in collaboration with the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation of the University of Leuven (Belgium). Contributions during the conference focused on a global challenge in the cultural realm: exploring pathways toward participatory governance of cultural heritage.
Participatory governance is understood as institutional decision-making structures that are supported by shared responsibilities and rights among diverse actors. It involves engaging communities, stakeholders, and local authorities in the preservation and management of cultural heritage sites. The conference aimed to showcase examples of successful participatory governance practices, discuss challenges and opportunities, and foster collaborations for the sustainable preservation and enjoyment of cultural heritage for future generations.
