- More about The Gas Tramcar: An Idea Ahead of its Time
The Gas Tram was a short-lived tramcar design that replaced horses and steam locomotives with quieter and smoother travel. It was a century ahead of its time, with twenty-first-century gas systems using greener biomethane as a fuel and biomethane-fuelled trams already in service in Dubai and Aruba. This book is the first ever comprehensive history of these vehicles, using unpublished photographs, drawings, and patents.

The Gas Tram was a fleeting phenomenon that briefly appeared to usher in a new era of tramcar design, replacing horses and steam locomotives on the streets with quieter and smoother travel. Proponents of the gas tram touted its low capital cost of conversion, eliminating the need for the expensive overhead catenary required for electric traction. Designs for gas tramcars were patented worldwide, and systems were briefly operated in Germany, Australia, Holland, Switzerland, and the UK, with proposals in France, New Zealand, and the USA. The fuel used was invariably domestic town gas drawn from local gasworks, and the vehicles were claimed to be highly cost-effective to operate. This innovative development, which was likely a century ahead of its time, is being replicated in the twenty-first century with the development of gas systems using much greener biomethane as a fuel. Biomethane, derived from the natural decomposition of organic waste that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, offers a clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. In addition, other vehicles utilizing hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity are being developed in various countries. This comprehensive book, the first ever to cover the history of these vehicles, features numerous previously unpublished photographs, drawings, and patents, providing a detailed insight into the evolution and development of gas-powered trams.
