The 66th Regiment of the German Infantry was a key unit in the First World War, participating in some of the most significant battles on the Western Front. These battles included the infamous Le Cateau, the First Marne, Arras 1915, the Somme, Chemin des Dames 1917, the German March 1918 offensive, Chemin des Dames 1918, the Second Marne, and the Siegfried Line. The regiment was formed in 1871 and saw action in various conflicts before the outbreak of the Great War.

The 66th Regiment was assigned to the 10th Army and participated in the Battle of the Frontiers in September 1914. The regiment suffered heavy losses and was forced to retreat to the rear. However, it was quickly re-formed and participated in the Battle of the Marne in September 1914, which marked a turning point in the war. The 66th Regiment was then involved in the Battle of the Aisne in October 1914 and the Battle of the Somme in July 1916.

The 66th Regiment was also involved in the German March 1918 offensive, which aimed to break the Allied lines and end the war. The regiment was involved in the Battle of Chemin des Dames 1918, which was a decisive victory for the German Army. The 66th Regiment was then involved in the Second Marne and the Siegfried Line, which marked the end of the war.

The 66th Regiment was a highly decorated unit, with numerous awards and decorations for its bravery and service. The regiment was also known for its high standard of training and discipline, which helped it to perform well in the field.

The regimental history of the 66th Regiment was written in 1930 by Major Dr Otto Korfes, an officer in the regiment for most of the war and a Reichsarchiv historian. The history includes maps and pencil sketches by the famed German war artist Döbrich-Steglitz, which provide a visual representation of the battles and campaigns in which the regiment was involved.
