This new abridgment of Marx and Engels' 1846 engagement with the philosophical tradition, edited and with an introduction by philosopher Tom Whyman, offers a fresh perspective on one of the most challenging and debated texts in Marx's oeuvre. Written in 1846 and subsequently abandoned by Marx and Engels, it was only rescued in the 1930s by researchers in the USSR. The German Ideology stands as the pinnacle of Marx's philosophical thought, a brilliantly insightful and still thrillingly radical work of materialist philosophical therapy. However, a fully satisfactory standalone version in English has yet to be achieved, with only a heavily abridged 1970 edition edited by C.J. Arthur and a facsimile edition taken from Vol. 5 of the Marx-Engels Collected Works available. In this revised Repeater Classics edition, Tom Whyman aims to rectify this. By expanding on generally available abridgements to include the majority of the section on Max Stirner, as well as amending the translation, adding notes, and providing a new critical introduction, this new edition of The German Ideology will enable non-specialists to engage with this critical work for the first time. As interest in Marx's work continues to grow, particularly in the wake of our current political system's failures, this new edition of The German Ideology will introduce Marx's most substantial vision of what communism could potentially entail to a whole new audience.
