In the 18th century, the town of Gorkha, located just north of Kathmandu, witnessed the valor and bravery of ruler Prithvi Narayan as he waged campaigns against his neighbors and the British. His warriors, renowned for their aggression and courage, gained the respect of the British, who recognized their potential as excellent soldiers. As peace was declared in 1816, a partnership was formed, which would prove crucial in UK defense for the next two centuries. The Gurkhas played a vital role in various conflicts, including the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the Burma campaign, and the Khyber Pass. During World War I, the Regiment was deployed to the trenches, where many battalions suffered significant losses. However, their resilience and fighting spirit were evident, as 20 Gurkha battalions were deployed in World War II, eventually increasing to 45 following Dunkirk. Around 250,000 Gurkha soldiers served, with notable contributions in North Africa, the Italian Campaign, Monte Cassino, and the decisive battles of Imphal and Kohima in the Far East. While the Gurkhas experienced a decline in overall numbers post-war, their contributions to various operations, including the Falklands and Afghanistan, have been unwavering. In his book "The Gurkha Way," John Sadler delves into the history of the Gurkhas, from their inception to the present day, through interviews, unpublished diaries, and correspondence. With over 200 years of experience, these steadfastly loyal soldiers serve as a link to an imperial past and a vital component of the modern British army. Their unique skills and combat prowess have earned them unparalleled respect and love from the British people. The Gurkhas are truly a remarkable unit, unmatched in any other army in the world, and their legacy continues to inspire generations.
