  • More about The Gypsy Economist: The Life and Times of Colin Clark

Colin Clark was an Anglo-Australian economist who made significant contributions to the field of economics, including developing the concept of GNP, discussing development economics, and predicting the rise of India and China. He was also the first economist to debunk post-war predictions of mass hunger. Despite his significant contributions, his work has been largely overlooked in the 30 years since his death.

Colin Clark, an Anglo-Australian economist, is the subject of the first intellectual biography in this book. Despite his remarkable talent for statistical analysis, which revolutionized the economics field, Clark's work has been largely forgotten in the 30 years since his passing. Throughout his career, he achieved numerous groundbreaking milestones. He was the first economist to introduce the concept of Gross National Product (GNP), the first to delve into development economics, and the first to predict the re-emergence of India and China as significant players in the global economy. In 1945, he accurately foresaw the rise and persistence of inflation when taxation levels exceeded 25% of GNP. Furthermore, he challenged post-war predictions of mass hunger by arguing that rapid population growth would lead to economic development. Clark's intellectual journey resembled his meandering through the fields of applied economics, much like his exploration of the English countryside and the Australian bush. His imaginative insights make him the esteemed gypsy economist of the 20th century.
