  • More about The Huguenot-Anglican Refuge in Virginia: Empire, Land, and Religion in the Rappahannock Region

The Huguenot-Anglican Refuge in Virginia was a Huguenot emigrant community established in 1687, with the arrival of an Anglican-ordained Huguenot minister from Cozes, France named John Bertrand. This community was hidden to researchers for more than 300 years and is the only one to fully embrace Anglicanism from its inception. Virginia officials offered Huguenot settlers access to French preaching and inexpensive land.

The Huguenot-Anglican Refuge in Virginia, a hidden community of Huguenot emigrants, emerged in 1687 along the Rappahannock River. This community, concealed for over 300 years, comes to life through a comprehensive examination of county court records and French Protestant records in England and France. This study, which includes 261 households and fifty-three indentured servants, including a significant group from Bertrand's hometown of Cozes, represents a significant Huguenot migration to English America and the only one to fully embrace Anglicanism from its inception. In July 1687, a French exile named Durand de Dauphiné published a tract at the Hague, outlining the migration pattern and geography. Virginia officials offered inducements such as access to French preaching by a Huguenot minister and inexpensive land to attract Huguenot settlers to Rappahannock County. John Bertrand was the first of five French exile ministers who served in the Rappahannock region between 1687 and 1767, performing a dual track ministry that bridged the gap between the Huguenot and Anglican faiths.
